Here “Karva” means small pot and “Chauth” means fourth day. This festival occurs on the fourth day Krishna paksh after completing Dussehra. In previous times, Men participated in the war by leaving their family and it takes some months or years to come back to the home. As there is no communication, their wives don’t know what the situation in the war. So all married women offer prayers to God for their husband safety. That tradition follows upto now and we named it as Karva Chauth
On this day women will take some food before sun rise and from that day begins they will fast upto moon rise. They will make some pooja thali. The pots are decorated with makeup items, ornaments and a plate is arranged with water, flowers, idol of guard Matha, food grains, etc. After completing fasting women offer water to the moon and exchanged the pots between ladies.
They are many stories behind this festival. Long back ago a queen named Veeravathi started doing fasting on this day. But she suffered from hunger and thirst. Her brothers can’t bear the situation of her and ask her to take the food, but she refused for it.
Then her brothers played a trick and showed one object as the moon. By believing their brothers word, she takes the food. Later she received the news of her husband’s death. She cried a lot and prayed to goddess shakti. Goddess convinced with her prayers and said her to do fasting again. This time also their brothers break the fasting by misleading her. She weeps a lot after that incident then Lord Shiva and Parvathi came near to her and Parvathi gave her blood and instructed her to do fasting without any break. After completing her fasting she sprinkled some holy blood on the dead husband and he came alive. From that day onwards all women do fasting on this day and complete it by seeing the moon.
