India’s largest telecom operator Airtel is upgrading its wired broadband network and reducing the cost of voice and data to attract new users. To attack Reliance Jio, with huge user base proved once again with the recent addition of 16 million users in less than a month. Now, Airtel is providing unlimited free data for three months.
Reliance Jio is offering high-speed wireless internet and unlimited free data for all its existing users until December and is likely to extend the offer. Airtel implemented new ‘vectorisation’ technology which allows broadband to deliver speed up to 100 mbps without replacing the present infrastructure.
With the help of new technology, the modem at user’s home can be changed at a one-time cost of Rs 1,000. This is the biggest technology upgrade ever in the wired broadband sector which involves five million users. Data consumption in the country has seen a rapid growth with the increase of smart televisions and use of multiple devices on a Wi-Fi network for which one needs a high-speed internet connection.
Companies such as Fast Web, British Telecom, Ericom, TI, and Telefonica use the same technology globally.
“We will use the same fiber network in the back and the front ends, use sound cancellation technology, and change the router to provide high speed. We are looking at the business in a slightly different manner. Offering some extra data is of marginal cost because we have already billed the infrastructure and delivery cost,” said, Ajay Puri, Director of operations at Bharti Airtel.
Mr.Puri also confirmed that the existing users would be upgraded to higher speeds at free of cost. They can also opt to continue with the present data packs.A higher speed internet offering will surely help in a Wi-Fi network. Multiple devices on the same broadband connection split the speed equally.
