In Future Smart Buildings may sense damage inside the buildings
Scientists are creating new smart buildings which can sense internal damage in the real-time even after the earthquake. This computation model is developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is used to monitor a building over time for signs of damage or mechanical stress.
Oral Buyukozturk, a professor at MIT, said.”This sensor activates immediately after any calamity like earthquake, and we can see the changes of the features and if and where there is damage to the system”.
He also said they provide continuous monitoring of the building and date base works as the health register for the building, it works as a function of time, much like a person’s changing blood pressure with age
This team tested its computational model on 21 storey building which had built in the year 1960 with reinforce concrete.
In the year 1960, Toksoz and others at MIT worked with the United States Geological Survey to outfit the Green Building with 36 accelerometers which record vibrations and movements on selected floors, from the building’s foundation to its roof.
Buyukozturk said these sensors represent a human nervous system.
This team first built a computer simulation of the building that represents the physical structure which is underlying in physics.Then they installed various parameters into the model including the strength and density of concrete walls, slabs, beams and stairs on each floor.
“So we are updating the new model with actual measurements which is used to give better information about what may have happened to the building,” Buyukozturk said
They accurately predict a building’s response to ambient vibrations, the group mined data from the buildings accelerometers, looking for key features that correspond directly to a building’s stiffness or other indicators of health.
They said they were continuously making the computational system more intelligent over time; Buyukozturk said “We are confident if there is damage to the building it will show up in the system”.
The building is safe, but it is subject to quite a bit of vibration, particularly in the upper floors. Outfitted sensors with outfitted algorithms work smarter and feel their own health in real time. It is possibly resilient to extreme events.
