Pokémon GO Servers Attacked: OurMine Takes Credit For Bringing Down Servers

The augmented reality game, Pokémon Go that gained popularity within a short span after its launch in the United States, Australia and New Zealand a couple of days ago, and is now officially launched in Canada on Sunday.

While people all around are going crazy about the game, a group of hackers attacked the Pokémon Go Servers on Saturday. And on the same day, the mobile gaming sensation was launched in 26 new European countries. Leaving Pokémon trainers furious this is the second time servers were down.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s account was hacked

The Hacking group called OurMine has worked for hours to bring down the Pokémon Go Login servers with a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The group claimed that the attack would be stopped only if the representatives from Pokémon Go Communicate with them. The group in a web post wrote - “No one will be able to play this game till Pokémon Go contact us on our website to teach them how to protect it!”

OurMine has been popular for hacking the Twitter accounts of celebs and tech leaders. With such attacks, the group which consists of three teenagers is usually advertising its security services. In recent past, the team was successful in accessing the Sundar Pichai and Jack Dorsey’s accounts.

A member of OurMine explained - “We don’t want other hackers to attack their servers, so we should protect their servers.”The wildly popular game that allows players to find the pocket monsters in the real world struggled to log in the game earlier also. It was when the servers crashed, due to the games’ overwhelming demand. And it is not just the OurMine group which claimed to attack the game; another group called Poodle Corp., on Twitter claimed responsibility for DDoSing the Pokémon Go servers which are not yet verified.

And finally, the company has addressed the server issues in a tweet on 17th July which states- “The issues causing the server problems have been identified. Trainers should once again be able to search for Pokémon in the real world.”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s account was hacked

Now a day’s nothing seems to be inevitable for hackers, even the CEO of Twitter can’t escape from becoming a prey of these invaders. Jack Dorsey joins the expanding list of High profile CEO’s whose social networking accounts are hacked.

A group of hackers under the name OurMine had hacked Dorsey’s Twitter account and posted few benign videos. The hacker tweeted “Hey, it’s OurMine, we are testing your security” from Jack’s account. It all happened at 2:50 AM ET and they linked the tweet to their website.

Twitter was quick to react and deleted those tweets within a short time. The attackers actually posted these messages via Dorsey’s Vine account which they have used a source to get access to the Twitter account.

Jack Dorsey probably had an old/shared password on his Vine account which may link it to another service that was compromised. Another reason for this incident can be Dorsey is using the same Vine’s password for a long time.

It had given a way for intruders to get into the company’s CEO account. It’s the same technique that OurMine had followed in its previous hacks of other famous people.

Whatever may be the reason Hackers proved that even high profiled people’s social networking accounts are not 100% secured.

This issue seems to be growing and is increasing user’s privacy concerns. Social networking platforms should find a permanent solution to these type of problems. On user’s part, everyone should follow some basic steps to prevent these hacks. Make sure you’re using a different password for every site, if you are unable to do you can use password managers like 1Password or LastPass.

Frequently update passwords of all your accounts and most importantly turn on two-factor authentication for services that have it. This authentication method sends a pin number via text message to your linked mobile number.

The same group named as OurMine were behind the hacks of social media accounts of Google and Facebook’s CEOs.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s Quora accounts had been breached by the hackers. Following this, Hackers posted about this on Sundar account, that they are responsible for the cause.

On Sunday, the group of hackers with the name “OurMine” has hacked the Sundar Pichai’s Quora account, which is the Question and Answer online social community.

The Hackers posted “We are just testing your security,” on CEO’s Quora account, and the same message is auto-posted to his Twitter account Via Quora. These posts were deleted on Monday from these accounts.

The team of hackers had also got the hands on the accounts of Spotify CEO (Daniel Ek) and the Amazon’s prominent executive. The good thing, so far hacks were relatively innocuous, and no significant consequences have been faced, or any other sensitive data had stolen. But the Silicon Valley is likely wondering who will be the next?

“We are just trying to tell everyone that nobody is safe!” OurMine said via email. Some accounts were broken into because of weak passwords, others because of some “vulnerability,”

The Hacker team “OurMine” has said via email that they will continue to hack the accounts of each executive and the famous personalities. The group claimed that in the last week, they had taken over the Twitter accounts of CEO of Spotify, Film star Channing Tatum and posted the screenshots.

So far the group is hacking for the publicity stunts, and the team has tweeted, that users can increase their security by purchasing the OurMine’s services. This group is offering the services for $100 to improve the security for their social media accounts and $1000 to check the vulnerabilities on the websites.  This group had claimed $18,400 till date after selling the services.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Social accounts got hacked by the hackers. The Social accounts Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram of Mark, which is not regularly used by Mark. He was Mostly on the Facebook which is not breached by the hackers. Mark doesn’t consider about other social networking sites of his accounts since he looks after his Facebook account. This doesn’t mean that he is not to bother to take care of his non-Facebook properties.

The hacking was done on Mark’s Twitter account which doesn’t tweet much. In fact, the last tweet was four years ago. The people on the Twitter have noticed that the account is facing some unusual changes.

The group called OurMine Team also mentioned that they had gained the access for the Mark’s Instagram Account. There are no signs of bleaching his Instagram account. They also posted a message about the hack of his LinkedIn account. Most of the details about this hack are not published in the social media. Some of the content is deleted quickly, and few were preserved for some of its posterity.

Now Mark is aware that the most of the rarely or unused accounts are also gets attacked, and they are the primary target for the intruders as it is the big name.

Hackers have reported that “dadada” password was leaked through a massive data breach done in the LinkedIn in May, with more than 164 million of user data was stolen at the time of the incident.

They changed the Pinterest page name to “Hacked By OurMine Team” with the description as “we are just testing your security, please DM (direct message) us.” These are the tweets posted by the hackers and defacing the Marks accounts. Now these accounts are returned to the owners, and the aberrant posts/tweets are deleted.
