Stan Wawrinka aged 31 yrs became the oldest US Open men’s champion in 46 years.He achieved this feat when he defeated the world No.1 Novak Djokovic on Sunday.With this victory, he claimed third grand slam title in his career.

Switzerland’s Wawrinka triumphed 6-7(1/7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in this final to add this title to already won in France and Australia over the past two years.

Serbia’s Djokovic started strong in the first set but struggled physically with his leg. The play went for about 4hrs. In the final set, Novak required treatment for a blister on his toe and was granted unusual medical timeout. He took off his both shoes and socks so as the trainer could help him out.

At this point, Wawrinka had complained to match referee and empire for 6min break as an interruption before his service game.

“ Stan, sorry I can’t stand ” Djokovic apologized across during the break time.

After resuming to the game, Djokovic earned three break points while Wawrinka held for 4-1. Djokovic , as a good returner in the final set – managed to convert only 3 of 17 break chances. He needed more toe treatment later in final fourth set.

After the battle is done, Djokovic congratulated Wawrinka “ Congratulations, Stan to you and to your whole team as well. Absolutely ,you deserve it today. You are more courageous in decisive moment and he deserve his title ”

Swiss Wawrinka said “ This is amazing. I am not with a goal of winning this match but, stepped in to court with an intention for trying to win this match.”

“ I played a lot of tennis and was empty.Emotion with the crowd, atmosphere, and the stadium was awesome.This is an amazing night.”

Novak Djokovic came to NewYork with many doubts on his fitness with wrist injury, his form after Olympics and Wimbledon defeat was not good with also unspecified personal issues.
