Vikalp Scheme

Is your journey cancelled because of your wait-listed railway tickets are not confirmed? Don’t worry the Indian Railways has come up with a new solution for these type of problems. They introduced the Vikalp Scheme which is very helpful for the passengers who got waitlisted tickets. From 1st April 2017, passengers can avail this Alternative Train Accommodation Scheme which is more beneficial for waitlisted passengers.

Until now there is a mismatch between accommodations of reserved tickets, i.e., some trains run with additional passengers while some trains run empty even though both the train run the same direction. In order to get rid of this situation, Indian Railways introduced the Vikalp Scheme. According to the reports, this scheme is available through railways online portal IRCTC and later it will make available to counters.

Under this IRCTC Vikalp Scheme, the wait-listed passengers can get confirmed berths in the next alternative train without paying any additional cost. For example, if you book tickets for Lucknow Mail which runs from New Delhi to Lucknow and you got wait listing. If you selected the option of Vikalp scheme, you could get confirmed ticket in the next train which runs on the same route.

The Alternative Train Accommodation Scheme is only available for the tickets booked through IRCTC. As soon as the chat prepared, if your train is still on a waiting list, you will receive an SMS which informs about activation Vikalp option. After activating you will get confirmed tickets details like new train name, berth number and coach number.

If you opt for Vikalp Scheme, you can upgrade to a higher class by paying the difference in cost. For example, you had AC 3 wait-listed ticket which you have booked and got a ticket in Sleeper Coach in new train through Vikalp scheme. You can change to AC 3 by paying the additional amount in case the tickets are available in AC coach.

The Vikalp Scheme will be available only for the candidates whose tickets are still in waiting list even after the chart is prepared. Once you select the Vikalp Scheme option, you cannot board the train which you booked. Indian Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that they are started the Alternative Train Accommodation Scheme trial basis since 1st November on Delhi-Jammu, Delhi-Lucknow and Delhi-Mumbai. People can utilise the scheme in premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Humsafar and Suvidha trains also.
