In order to stop the bulk train ticketing at the counters, the Indian Railways introduced the new system. The Railways ministry announced the new integration at which the Aadhaar card is made mandatory for the Online Train Ticketing. Aadhaar card number is now necessary for the senior citizens to avail concessions in booking train tickets from 1st April 2017.

According to the reports, the Indian Railways may soon make the Aadhaar card mandatory for train tickets booking through IRCTC website. As per the new business plan, 2017-18 revealed by the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, in addition to Aadhaar-based ticketing system the railways will also move towards cashless ticketing system.

The Indian Railways installed 6,000 point-of-sale machines and also 1,000 automatic ticket vending machines throughout the country railway stations. Moreover, the integrated ticketing app is going to introduce by the month of May 2017 in order to promote cashless transaction.

“Aadhaar card number will be required for one-time registration at the IRCTC ticketing site. The step is aimed at eliminating touts from registering with fake identities,” a senior railway ministry official said. For this, the railways are also developing the software to counter the false identities.

This new system is introduced to prevent the touts corner a bulk of tickets and selling those at higher prices which become a major problem for the railways. In the business plan, Indian Railways are also launching new tourist trains which connect hill stations. It also enhances the passenger comfort through improved services, provides pleasurable journey experience and catering services.
