The Government pensioners over 11.6 lakh can now track the status of their pension and grievance redressal through SMS as well as monitors the receipt through online. This preventive step is taken to aim at the ‘lessen harassment’ for senior citizens.

The Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley launched this new web portal which mainly focuses and made available to the central civil pensioners, freedom fighter pensioners and family pensioners. Through this web portal, people can know the complete details about pension profile by digitally logging into the official website of Central Pension Accounting Office, i.e., cpao.nic.in.

“Nobody should be harassed, least of all pensioners because they are mostly senior citizens. And they need that resource and their life depends on that resource. So any delay or red tapism can actually cause a lot of harassment if not destitution,” Arun Jaitley said.

CPAO main objective is to provide a simplifying procedure and therefore reducing the number of agencies of pension payment. This also increases the process of authorization, revision and transfer of pension through authorised banks. It functions under the Controller General of Accounts.

The scheme also covers the payment of pension to the former Members of Parliament and other amenities to the former Presidents/Vice Presidents of India. The working of CPAO is completely computerised, and it maintains database securely.

Each pensioner will be allotted with 12-digit PPO (Pension Payment Order) numbers. In each PPO numbers, the first five digits indicate the code number of PPO Issuing Authority, next two digits indicates the year of issue, next four digits indicate sequential number of PPO and last digit is a check digit for the purpose of the computer.
