However the company failed to mention how long this delay will take to clear, but said that IT systems were down “everywhere” and “hopefully, it won’t be much longer.”

Delta operates about 5000 departures a day and has bee the second most busiest airlines in the US for the year 2015. It is a member of SkyTeam Alliance and Air France-KLM

Passengers waiting in long queues uncertain about their journey shared pictures via Twitter venting their frustration.Similar computer glitch hit Southwest airline and American Airlines in the past because of which they had to suspend flights.

The system outage is a result of massive automation the airlines make for operations, distribution of boarding passes on smartphones and making their planes wifi enabled, say industry consultants. Many of the passengers found waiting and sleeping at the airports due to this massive delay in the delta flights.

“A Delta ground stop has been lifted and limited departures are resuming following a power outage in Atlanta that impacted Delta computer systems and operations worldwide,” the airline tweeted in an 8:40 a.m. ET update. “Cancellations and delays continue.”

“Customers heading to the airport should expect delays and cancellations. There may also be some lag time in the display of accurate flight status at delta.com, the Fly Delta App and from Delta airlines representatives on the phone and in airport.”
