General Studies Paper I is scheduled in the morning session from 9.30 AM onwards while the General Studies Paper I consists of 100 Multiple Choice Questions carries 200 Marks and the time limit is two hours. The General Studies Paper I has varied range of subjects like History, Geography, Polity, Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology etc.

Every year, IAS Prelims 2017 is conducted in two phases – Prelims and Mains. Candidates who will qualify the prelims examination will have the chance to appear for main examination. The main examination will be conducted on 28 October 2017.
UPSC permits six attempts to each candidate for the examination. The restriction is not applicable in case of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates.
The paper consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). For each question, there are four options. Candidate has to select one option among them.
Negative marking is applicable for each question in which a wrong answer has been marked. One-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty. In case candidate has given more than one answer, it is treated as wrong answer even if one of the given answers happen to be correct and there will be same penalty as above for that question. If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is given by the candidate; there will be no penalty for that question.
In 2017, the apex exam body Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will select the candidates through the Civil Service Examination 2017 (Pre and Main Exam) to fill 980 Group A and Group B posts in Indian Civil Services under various cadres, including IAS, IPS, IFS.
Approximately, more than one million (11 to 12 lakh) candidates across the nation are appearing for the IAS Prelims 2017. Last year, only 4.59 lakh candidates appeared for the examination, however the number of applicants was higher.
