Central government has launched a new online complaint box She-Box (sexual harassment electronic box) for registering complaints against women sexual harassment in work places. The Women and Child Development Ministry took the initiative of She-Box to enable employees of the Central Government to lodge complaints related to sexual harassment of women at work places under the SH (Sexual Harassment at work place) Act on Shebox.
Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development (WCD), Maneka Gandhi directed the officials to make ‘She-Box’ as Interactive’ as possible. She also stated the “We are also going to soon conduct a national survey to assess the nature and magnitude of sexual harassment at the workplace,” The Main aim is to provide faster solution to women facing sexual harassment at work under the SH Act, Minister Maneka said.
Maneka also added the initiative “She-Box” is to begin with Central Government women employees first, later it’s going to widen to include private sector employees as well. Added to this Maneka said, there are certain changes to be in our interface; once the changes are done employees from private organisation can also file complaints. The complaints lodged will directly send to the ICC of the related Department/Ministry etc.
Around 30.87 lakh people works in the Government of India which is meant to be the largest employer in the country. According to the Census of Central Government employees, 2011, women form 10.93% of the total regular employees in Central Government.
Sexual Harassment of women in work places is a serious concern to the humanity on the whole. To tackle this problem, the SH Act ensures that all the work places with more than 10 employees form an internal complaints committee for receiving complaints of sexual harassment.
The WCD Ministry is also planning to add a section in the portal where complaints can outlet the real cause of the complaint. After receiving many complaints from women employees in various ministries last October, the decision of having a web portal was taken. A safe work place is every women’s right.
