Motorola Moto Z Review: First Ever Modular Phone Packs Good Specs

Talking about the display in the Moto Z Play review, It is a slim design phone but is slightly thicker compared to its sibling Moto Z. The fact is that the whole design of Moto Z Play is committed to offering a customizable phone as per individual needs. The less expensive in the series, Moto Z Play comes with an excellent built quality which incorporates a combo of aluminum frame and glass which poses premium smartphone look.

On the back, it’s completely glass finish instead of metal which the design itself says it is exclusively made to accommodate external mods. A circular hump of rear camera with flash is observed and magnets were arranged on the bottom which ensures a tight stick of the mods to the phone.

Coming to the front profile, Moto Z Play gets extended bezels along with the unnecessary Moto branding which make no sense. Fingerprint scanner placed on the bottom is good but only handles the unlocking function of the phone. Front facing camera and LED flash were adjusted on the top on either side of the earpiece.

SIM tray and noise cancellation microphone were provided on the top edge, while the volume rocker keys and power button were positioned on the right edge. The bottom edge houses a 3.5 mm audio jack and USB type-C charging slot.

Moto Z Play sports a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display like the other devices in the series as expected. The HD resolution of 1080p with 403 ppi is very sharp and good from all viewing angles. The screen displays deep black and vibrant colors and excellent viewing angles. The display of Moto Z Play is good even in plenty of sunlight, thanks to the ambient light sensor.

The display brightness is good, and colors are accurate in “standard’ mode. Moto Z Play screen has the motion sensors which allow you to wave your hand for Active Moto Display. However, Moto Z play is not the first to have AMOLED display, and the discrete notifications icons are interactive here.

The smartphone is splendid at performing tasks like opening apps and returning to home screen. In fact, you don’t find any delay in switching between apps and is really impressive at speed. RAM management is also excellent at its job results a hassle free experience.

Apart from the ambient light sensor and the fingerprint sensor, the device also accommodates great sensor range for a better connectivity which includes Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Magnetometer, Proximity sensor and Audio Monitor. There is a need to special mention about the 3.5mm audio out jack as the other flagships just skip to provide this excellent quality of audio output.

Apple iPhone 7 review: Apple Moniker Says it all

The Moto Z Play runs stocked version Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with the company owned UI on the top. It would be better if the phone directly gets the Android 7.0 Nougat in the box. But still, Motorola avails one of the better Android versions what you can get outside of the Nexus line.

The Moto Z Play packs the full suite of Moto software features like Moto Display, Moto Voice, and Moto Actions. Moto Display persists to be one of the most useful features any OEM has added to Android even after a few years. The User interface shows the time, date and active notifications.

The camera department is which the Moto Z Play takes thumbs up, A 16MP sensor of f/2.0 aperture with Dual LED flash on the rear is assigned for imaging duties. In spite of 16 MP camera which is regular in all flagship range, The rear camera includes some features which satisfy camera lover in you. Laser auto-focus, Phase detection autofocus (PDAF), Burst mode are impressive. You can capture pictures by just a tap with Zero Shutter Lag and Professional Mode, and quick capture will serve for your comfort.

Reviewing the camera performance, the colors are accurate while the phone struggles to perform well in low light conditions. Moto Z Play switches to the low-light mode and is evident overall when compared to the budget phones.

Coming to the front camera, 5MP shooter with LED flash on the front does a good job in brightening up. However, lighting cannot be used as the only light source as it is a bit harsh.

Moto Z Play can record video of 720p at 120fps, 1080p at 30fps, 4K at 30fps. The device manages video better even in the absence of the Optical Image Stabilization. Redesigned camera app is little more feature-filled and easy to use.
