Indian Railways approved Wifi technology of state-owned Centre for Development of Telematics (CDOT). Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha tweeted “C-DoT WiFi Technology got approved by Railways.”

Indian railways are providing free wifi service at busy stations. He transport giant has collaborated with Google to provide free wifi at 100 stations by the end of this year.

The minister presided over the 44th meeting of the C-DoT Governing Council during which he advised the company to think regarding 5G technology and asked them to consider and recruit the best brains.

“In the 44th meeting of C-DoT Governing Council, directed C-DoT to think about 5G. Directed C-DoT to consider recruit & retain best brains with better salary & perks,” Sinha said.

C-DOT was established in 1984 with an initial responsibility to designing and developing digital exchanges. It has offices in Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

Indian Railways will collaborate with Google to showcase its heritage on the digital platform. This will turn out to the best partnership ever since both the Giants are reaching thousands of the customers in their functionality.

Google has agreed to partner with Indian Railways to digitise its heritage assets and help create a digital repository for universal online access free of cost, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

An agreement about this will be signed soon between National Rail Museum and Google Cultural Institute (GCI). Through this Indian collaboration, railways can exhibit its vast list o heritage assets including bridges, steam locos, buildings, artefacts and museums.

GCI was launched in 2011 to provide cultural material available and accessible to everyone and to digitally preserve it. They are a non-profit organisation working with various cultural and government organisations

The official said “collaboration would not only make NRM accessible online and offer virtual tours but also help digitise the national transporter’s entire heritage inventory which includes more than 20 museums, hundreds of steam locos, coaches, station buildings, bridges among others.Once these are placed online, it will act as a great tourist attraction,” he said.

Various government organisations and cultural groups have collaborated with GCI to preserve the data digitally. Currently, Google is partnered with Indian Railways to provide free wifi in 100 railway stations across the country. It has finished the project in 232 stations with more than two million users availing the free wifi.

Indian Railways is also preparing a comprehensive conservation management program to preserve and promote its heritage assets. Along with this, a dedicated rail heritage website will be operational for the dissemination of information.

GCI is an initiative followed by Google art project. The institution has partnered with various museums including British Museum, Yad Vashem, the Museo Galileo in Florence, etc. Archaeological Survey of India is also a partner of GCI.
