Hartalika Teej 2017 is a holy Hindu festival celebrated by women for Goddess Parvati. The festival is observed in the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadra month on August 24, 2017. The word Hartalik is a combination of two words ‘Harat’ and ‘Aalika.’ Harat means abduction or kidnaps and ‘Aalika’ simplifies friend. Teej festival is celebrated in many countries by Hindus like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Bihar. On that married as well as unmarried women worship Lord Shiva and Parvati. Unmarried women pray to get a good husband while married women worship to have a prosperous domestic life.

Origin of Hartalika Teej

The celebration of Teej is originated from the history of Lord Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, it was known that Lord Parvati went to some forest and did Tapasya and took 108 re births on earth. It was known that till 107 birth she could not get Lord Shiva as her husband. In her 108 birth Shiva realized her love and engaged her. It was known that on that day Mata Parvati said Women who perform puja would be blessed with a good husband and have a happy married life. Women should also do nirjala fast which is symbolic to self –punishment that Mata Parvati performed.

Haratalika Teeja Fasting Celebrations

On the first day of Teej women start doing fasting near God. The first is known as Khane Din, all women gather at one place and start dancing and singing devotional songs. A grand feast takes place and men host it. On the three days, women will not work at all. All they do is dress up and makeup themselves and go to other houses who invited for the feast. These three are said to have freedom for women.

On the second day of Teej women start doing fasting by taking promise near God. They don’t even take a single drop of water or grain of food, while few take few liquids. The fasting is done by married and unmarried women. They dress like a goddess and visit Shiva temple nearby. On the way they sing and dance. The starting doing Abhishekam to Shiva lingam and offer flowers, fruits, coins, etc. the essential part of puja is oil lamp which should be although the night. It is believed that light brings peace and prosperity to the husband and family.

The third day is called Rishi Panchami after completion of puja in the previous day women pay homage to sages, offer prayers to deities. On the third day, they bath with Datiwan leaves which are taken with roots. All the last day of Teej there is believe that this act removes all their sins in life.
