The festival of Dasara indicates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. It is one of the widely celebrated festivals in all regions of India. Vijayadashmi is also called as Dussehra, Dasara and Dashain. It is one of the traditional Indian festivals that take place in the months of Ashwin and Kartika. Hindus observe a ten day of fast, celebrations and rituals to mark the celebrations. People exchange Dussehra wishes with each other and celebrate the day with utmost devotion.
Dasara Symbolises the triumph of Lord Rama over the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who abducted Lord Rama’s wife, Sita. It also represents the victory of Goddess Durga who killed Mahishasura. In Mysore, the Chamundeshwari Devi (the avatar of Goddess Durga) seated in a golden howdah on the elephant is progressed for three kilometres from Mysore Palace. The Palace is fully decorated with colourful lights during these ten days, and lots of tourists’ visits to this place.
The festival in Kullu region is celebrated in the month of October in Himachal Pradesh. Kullu Dussehra is celebrated in Dhalpur ground in Kullu town. This festival begins on Vijayadashmi day and lasts for seven days after that. This festival is unique where a lot of deities of Himachal will be taken to one place and celebrates the win of Lord Rama over Ravana. Approximately, over 200 deities will bring together on a final day to Dhalpur including Goddess Hadimba. During this Dussehra celebrations lot of cultural activities happen in Kullu town.
Like Kullu Dasara, the deities from surrounding villages gather at Danteshwari Devi temple in Jagdalpur of Bastar, Chhattisgarh. Maa Danteshwari Devi is a local Goddess, worshipped as the incarnation of Shakti. Every year during Dussehra celebrations thousands of tribals from surroundings jungles will gather here to pay homage to Goddess Durga. The celebrations last throughout the month.
Vijayawada is one of the must places to visit during Dasara festival. The festival is celebrated for nine days in which the Goddess Durga will be decorated in her nine avatars. The famous Kanakadurga Devi temple is decorated with lights throughout nine days. So many devotees from across the country visit Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, especially on Vijayadashmi celebrations. The most delightful part of Dasara is the tenth day of Teppotsavam in Krishna River.
Ramleela is the main part of the Varanasi Dussehra festival. Especially in Ram Nagar, Ram Leela is conducted in multi-stage local theatres at a long stretch of 31 days. The festival was celebrated for Lord Rama victory over Ravana. The idols of Ravana will set the fire on Vijayadashmi day. Tourists visit Ram Nagar to witness Ram Leela.
