The state of Royal Bengal Tigers may soon get a new name as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet on Tuesday propose to rename West Bengal as ‘Bengal,’ Bangla,’ or Bongo.’ The name change proposal evoked many reactions from opponent party leaders, famous personalities, Bengalis, and many other Indians. The state is currently being referred as ‘Paschim Bangla’ or ‘Paschim Banga,’ in states official language Bengali.

The reason behind the name change proposal, according to the officials is Mamata does not want the state to come last alphabetically. But reports say that the Chief Minister was fed up with having to speak last or not at all at the meetings. Mamata’s cabinet on Tuesday approved the move that the state which is located in eastern India should be renamed to ‘Bengal’ in English and ‘Bongo’ or Bangla’ in Bengali.

“For the sake of the people of the state, it’s heritage and culture as well as to promote and protect its interests at the national level, we have proposed to rename West Bengal as Bengal in English and ‘Banga’ or Bangla in Bengali,” Partha Chatterjee, Parliamentary Affairs Minister told the media.

Chatterjee stated that a special session of the assembly will be called from August 26 to talk about the resolution. “On August 29 and 30, we will discuss the issue and urge all to accept the new name,” added Chatterjee.

Well, a slew of mixed reactions on the proposal came from authors, musicians, political leaders and common people. “I welcome the name change, but the name should not be Bongo. That is a musical instrument,” Babul Supriyo, Union Minister and famous playback singer who hails from West Bengal told to media.

A teenager trolled - “On one hand you have liquor on the other you have an instrument. We don’t know which way to go.”

“Bongo is an instrument that is played. I do not want people to crack dirty puns about it,” stated the BJP Lok Sabha member from West Bengal.

The Banerjee government earlier proposed the decision to rename the state dropping ‘West’ from the name in the year 2011 which wanted to change the Bengali name of the state to “Poschimbongo.”

“The name West Bengal is meaningless. The state was originally known as Bangabhoomi in an earlier age. After Partition, the name of the state was changed. Many of us did not like it. I would not call it rechristening, rather going back to the original nomenclature,” said author Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Sahithya Academy award winner.

People choose the micro-blogging site Twitter to point out all the things that have the new proposed names. Didi plans to name West Bengal as Bengal to come higher in the alphabetical ladder! What about naming it ‘Amrika’ to get extra ‘high’ and some veto!,” Comrade Shahid tweeted.

“#Bongo#Bingo#WestBengal”- was another funny tweet
