Wind, Solar Projects to Create Employment for Over 3 Lakh People in India

A recent study analyses that over 300,000 new workers to be employed in wind and solar jobs. More than one million total employment opportunities will be created by 2022, to achieve India’s ambitious clean energy goals to install 160 GW of renewable power.

The study was published jointly by the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The rooftop solar segment is labour-intensive and will employ 70 per cent new workforce. This creates jobs seven times more than the large-scale projects like solar farms.

Also, the study said that there is a strong growth in the domestic solar manufacturing industry. This growth can provide fulltime employment for 45,000 more people in India. The CEEW-NRDC study says “Greening India’s Workforce: Gearing Up For Expansion of Solar and Wind Power in India.”

The study estimates that the country clean energy goals have the potential to put 58,600 people to work in utility solar, 34,600 in wind power, and 238,000 in rooftop solar jobs in the next five years. The job will be distributed between Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh which are leading in job creation. These wind jobs are mainly focused in few states which have high wind potential and wind capacity.

“Eighty per cent of the new clean energy workforce will be employed during the construction phase. However, despite these being contractual jobs, the large pipeline of renewable energy projects creates enough opportunities for workers to stay employed,” says, Neeraj Kuldeep, CEEW Programme Associate.
