White House Delays Trump’s New Immigration Order To Next Week

The White House announced that it was is delaying the release of a revised executive order on travel and refugees until next week, an official said. The official did not provide any explanation for the delay, The Hill magazine reported.

On Tuesday, White House policy adviser Stephen Miller told Fox News that the new order will largely resemble the old one, but that the changes will be “mostly minor technical differences”.

On Wednesday, Miller stressed that the revisions, though minor, will help the policy pass legal muster. He did not provide further details about what the changes will entail, but said they would result in “a new and different executive order “.

“The executive order will be fully responsive to the courts - though any changes are of course very technical and legal in nature, the significance of the changes will be quite substantial,” he said in an email to The Hill.

“Again: any judges reviewing the order will find it wholly and completely responsive.” The original order issued on January 27 banned refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US.

It also halted refugee resettlement for 120 days and banned Syrian refugees indefinitely. The order sparked mass protests and confusion at airports, and US courts have temporarily blocked the ban.

The new order is said to be effect above 11 million undocumented outsiders and over three lakh Indian-Americans are likely to be deported from the US as an effect of Trump’s new order.

Trump, Trudeau Express Unity on Trade, But Divisions on Immigration

US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday expressed their willingness to work together and build “bridges” to improve bilateral trade, at the same time that they made clear their deep differences on immigration and accepting refugees.

The two leaders held their first bilateral meeting since Trump took office on January 20 and afterwards offered a joint press conference at the White House, albeit one at which few details were provided regarding how and on what they will cooperate in the coming months.

Trump did say in response to a question about his promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, signed by the US, Canada and Mexico more than 20 years ago, that US trade with Canada is “outstanding” and that “we’re going to work together to make it even better”.

“We have a very outstanding trade relationship with Canada. We’ll be tweaking it. We’ll be doing certain things that are going to benefit both of our countries. It’s a much less severe situation than what’s taking place on the southern border,”  Trump quoted.

In the case of Mexico, the President said that “on the southern border, for many, many years, the transaction was not fair to the United States.”

“We’re going to work with Mexico, we’re going to make it a fair deal for both parties,” added Trump, emphasizing that “we’re going to get that worked out. We’re going to make it fair, but so that everybody is happy.”

In Canada, both conservatives and liberals feel that NAFTA, implemented in 1994, has been a key element in their country’s economic well-being by enhancing trade between Ottawa and Washington to the point where they are now the world’s two top trade partners.

At the press conference, Trudeau emphasized that “millions of good, middle-class jobs on both sides of the border depend on this crucial partnership.”

The potential renegotiation of NAFTA “is a real concern for many Canadians because we know that our economy is very dependent on our bonds, our relationship with the United States,” Trudeau said.

On the other hand, Trudeau made clear that he is not going to “lecture” Trump about immigration and security policies, but he also said that Canada will “continue to pursue our policies of openness towards immigration, refugees, without compromising security.”

The premier said that Canada has taken in more than 40,000 Syrian refugees without compromising national security, a situation that stands in contrast to Trump’s recent immigration and travel ban, now temporarily blocked by a federal appeals court.

That executive order suspends for 120 days the entry of refugees into the US and for 90 days the issuing of visas to citizens of seven Muslim-majority nations with histories of terrorism.

In justifying that measure, Trump said on Monday that “we cannot let the wrong people in, and I will not allow that to happen during this administration,” adding that he is being “praised” for his immigration stance.

Both leaders emphasized the long-standing friendly ties between the US and Canada, and Trudeau stated that the two nations will continue to enjoy the “effective integration” of their two economies.

New H1B legislation: All You Need to Know About the New Law

Two powerful Senators of the US have announced about introducing new H1B legislation. This move will tighten the noose around the H1B visa programme if passed by the Congress. Also, this new legislation may upset Indian IT firms.

The bill is to be introduced by Dick Durban, and Senator Chuck Grassley requires US Citizenship and Immigration Services to prioritize for allocating H1B visas the first time. This will promise preference of an H1B visa for the “best and brightest” students being educated in the US. Also, this will leg up to advanced degree holders with valuable skills, and those being paid a high wage.

Grassley claims the Congress introduced these programmes to encourage high-skilled workforce in America, but not to replace it. Despite the fact that few companies are making the most of the programmes by trying to cut American workers for cheaper labor.

“We need programmes dedicated to putting American workers first. When skilled foreign workers are needed to meet the demands of our labor market, we must also ensure that visa applicants who honed their skills at American colleges and universities are a priority over the importation of more foreign workers,” Says, Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Adding to that, he also said that the bill takes these steps to make sure that the programmes work better. However, it essentially works for Americans and skilled foreign workers alike. The new legislation restores Congress’ original objective in the H1B and L1 visa programmes. This includes modifying wage requirements, increasing enforcement and securing protections for both visa holders and American workers.

“Reforming the H1B and L-1 visa programmes is a critical component of fixing our broken immigration system and must be included in comprehensive immigration reform legislation,” Durbin said.

The bill would crack down on outsourcing companies which allow large numbers of H1B and L-1 workers. However, it only permits for temporary training purposes only, and the workers will be sent back to their home countries to do the same job. In particular, it prohibits companies of over 50 employees from hiring additional H1B employees.
