Moto G4 Plus Review: Best in Class Budget Smartphone

Moto G series smartphones are quite familiar in the budget segment. Essentially, it carries the prime brand name well in the market. The series has gained huge attention with power packed specs and tempting price tags. But now, there are so many Chinese offerings like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo with much lesser prices. Now, the Lenovo-owned Motorola is up with Moto G4 Plus surpassing all it rivals with the brand name ‘Moto.’ And as we do, here is the Moto G4 Plus review for you.

Design:

The design of Moto G4 Plus is quite a sensitive thing to disagree the fact that it is not the best design out there. The rear panel has lost the curve design which we observed in the earlier Moto G phones. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the front panel below the display.

To be honest, it is quite a bad placement as it doesn’t perform any other function except the fingerprint scanning. The only identical change observed in the Moto G4 Plus over the Moto G4 is the fingerprint scanner. The rear panel of the device also has flaw about the stupid camera bump which embosses over the body surface. Also, you may complain about the protection when you place it somewhere.

On the top, you’ll get a 3.5 mm audio out jack on the top edge. The metal frame device has the power button and volume rockers on the right edge. Bottom edge packs the micro-USB slot alone, and the left edge remains empty. The front panel of the Moto G4 Plus looks good if you compromise about the fingerprint scanner placement and microphone beside it. Overall, Moto G4 Plus design is absolutely acceptable with the 5.5-inch form factor and light weight.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 review: Above the Budget, Within the Price

Display:

The key factor which you fall in love with Moto G4 Plus is its 5.5-inch display. The Full HD display has the resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which you don’t find it any of budget phones. The 401 ppi give you the incredible clarity which makes the display so sweet.

Though it’s not a Super AMOLED, Moto G4 Plus display is really crisp, with vibrant colors. The screen also offers a great readability in sunlight even on a bright day. Sadly, it is not a water resistant, but it can resist splashes and dust unless you submerge it in water. On a final note, the display on the Moto G4 Plus is definitely not the same which you get with peers.

Moto G4 Plus Specifications Review:

The Moto G4 Plus uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 617 SoC with an octa-core chip running at 1.5GHz. You get 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage, and you also have another variant with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage. Multi-tasking on the phone is a great experience, and it performs with ease. You don’t find any lag issues while doing your regular tasks on the phone. Switching between the apps is smooth as well. The RAM management on the G4 Plus is really fast and leaves you plenty of spare while regular usage.

Coming to the gaming performance on the Moto G4 Plus, it satisfies the gamer in you with a great gaming experience. Even heavy graphic games like Asphalt 8 and Nova 3 run very well without any noticeable lag or frame drop. You also have the option to throttle the CPU speed to prevent it from overheating. Here we provide you the benchmark scores for your reference. G4 Plus AnTuTu score is about 42,229 and scored 17fps in GFXbench. Surely, Moto G4 Plus performance is something beyond what we expect on regular budget smartphones.

Moto G4 Plus runs Android Marshmallow 6.0 Motorola continues the tradition of offering the near-stock version of Android experience without too many customizations. Again, Motorola tries to maintain the bloatware low and offer the usual suite of Moto enhancements like Moto Display and Moto Actions. Other software features like flip over to mute the call ringer and Chop-chop flash are great. The camera app functions like the double twist for app launch and QR code reading will impress you.

Camera:

Camera in the Moto G4 Plus stands as the biggest highlight with a 16-megapixel rear shooter with f/2.0 aperture. The primary camera also has other features like Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) which works well. G4 Plus has also got the laser autofocus system which quickly locks on to nearby objects. The sensor clicks some amazing photos which force you to rely upon the camera. The quality of image what you get has improved, and now photos get a great detail. Images clicked from G4 Plus are clear, colors are punchier and focusing speeds are fast as well.

Pictures took under artificial lighting, and low light looks good but may observe noise when zoomed in. The tap-to-focus option enables to focus on the particular subject with a slider. Besides that, you also get more shooting modes like panorama, slow-motion video, and a professional mode. Moto G4 Plus can record videos up to 1080p, and the quality is great in most of the lighting conditions. None the less, Slow-motion video is set at 120fps at 540p resolution. The front facing sensor of the Moto G4 Plus manages to click some detailed selfies in daylight conditions. But the video recording on the front camera is something that we cannot expect too much.

Battery:

Moto G4 Plus packs a 3,000 mAh battery which makes decent use of it considering the hardware it boasts. The battery lasts day and a half on a moderate usage with more than 4 hours screen on time. Exceptionally, it offers up nearly a day even if you are a heavy user. G4 Plus does offer 20 hours of talk time and manages to play video loop of 12 hours and 4 minutes. Moto G4 Plus supports fast charging which Motorola calls it ‘TurboPower’ tops the battery quickly. You can attain full battery in a duration of just 90 mins which is great to see on a budget smartphone.
