Meta’s WhatsApp is reportedly launching a new privacy feature that mutes unknown callers, currently accessible to a select group of beta testers.
This feature offers WhatsApp users a way to enhance their privacy and improve their user experience by preventing unwanted calls from strangers. As confirmed by WABetaInfo, the feature is being rolled out to some beta testers who have installed the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.10.7 update available on the Google Play Store.
The report indicates that some beta testers can mute unknown callers through a toggle located within WhatsApp Settings > Privacy. This feature enables users to silence calls from unfamiliar phone numbers while still displaying them in the Calls tab and the notification center.
By introducing this feature, WhatsApp provides users with a new tool for greater control over incoming calls. It helps minimize the risk of scams and mute unsolicited calls, allowing users to concentrate on work or other essential tasks.
The report highlights the usefulness of this tool in adding an extra layer of privacy to user accounts. The capability to mute unknown callers is currently available to some beta testers who have installed the latest WhatsApp beta version for Android from the Google Play Store, with a broader rollout planned in the coming days.
WhatsApp also tests a feature that automatically plays GIFs, which is currently available only to a limited number of beta testers. Previously, users had to tap on a GIF to initiate its animation. Still, with the latest WhatsApp beta for Android or iOS, GIFs will play automatically as users scroll through conversations.
This feature is accessible to some beta testers who have installed the most recent WhatsApp beta version for iOS via the TestFlight app.
