International Day of Peace seeks to promote the peace among nations and people. It is also known as World Peace Day which is observed on 21st September every year. It is dedicated to world peace and specifically in the absence of war and violence.

The International Day of Peace was established in the year 1981 by the resolution 36/67 by United Nations General Assembly. The intention of this resolution is to have entire world observe a day of peace and nonviolence.

The World Peace Day is first celebrated in the year 1982 and kept by different nations, political groups, military groups and people around the world. The General Assembly declared this is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace.

Peace is just more than the absence of armed conflict between or within the states. On International Day of Peace, the UN-Secretary General rings a bell made from the coins which are donated by the 60 countries and holds a special ceremony on this day.

The theme of this year Peace day is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”. In 2013, for the first time, the Peace day was dedicated by the US General Secretary to peace education. Since 2004, the World Council of Churches has joined the United Nations in marking September 21 the day of prayer for peace.
