The Union Cabinet accepted to give international status for Vijayawada Gannavaram Airport in Andhra Pradesh. Before state bifurcation, Hyderabad used to be the international airport in AP. But after division, there is no international airport in AP till now. So the cabinet decided to give international status to the Gannavaram airport in the capital city, and the government is hoping to improve the connectivity to AP and also attract tourists.
On this regard, an official statement stated that the decision is taken concerning about the increasing passenger traffic growth and demands and the Airline officials are in work of upgrading the airport involving infrastructure and international operations. Recently Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu inaugurated the new transit terminal building. Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu claimed that they would provide employment for at least 1,150 people.
Union Minister Arun Jaitley in an interview said that this is per the provisions of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Andhra Pradesh on this note. He tweeted that as per the decision of Union Cabinet, Vijayawada joins the list of International Airports in India and the airlines will now welcome people from all over to explore Andhra Pradesh.
