Puthandu is also known as Varusha Pirappu, and it is believed that on this day Lord Brahma started this creation. It is the New Year celebrations for the Tamilians observed in the month of Chithirai. On the eve of Puthandu, people prepare the tray of banana, mango, betel leaves, jackfruit, areca nuts, rice, coconut, mirror, gold or silver jewellery and flowers. This tradition is called as Kanni, and people view this first in the morning followed by celebrations.
