The Election Commission of India has canceled the RK Nagar by-elections which were scheduled on April 12. The evidence of rampant corruption and bribery came to focus after a series of high-profile IT raids on Sunday.
The Commission has decided to hold the by-election of the former chief minister Jayalalithaa’s constituency. This Canceled by-polls was heading for a fierce fight between the ruling AIADMK and the opposition DMK parties.
The Election Commissions (EC)’s announced the decision after tax authorities unveiling large-scale bribery scandal. IT department has seized the documents during raids on state health minister Vijaya Bhaskar’s house on Friday.
Reports claim that Sasikala group of the AIADMK gave Rs 4,000 to each voter in the north Chennai locality which was the home constituency of late chief minister Jayalalithaa. Also, the leaks suggest that Sasikala-led AIADMK is giving more than Rs 89.5 crore for seven ministers to distribute among RK Nagar voters.
Further documentation also reportedly point outs the uncontrolled corruption, transfer and posting processes of the state. Beside this, it also unveils illegal tie-ups with private education institutions.
However, this Rk Nagar incident is not the first of its kind that bribery leading elections to postpone. The poll panel canceled elections in Thanjavur and Aravakuruchi constituencies back in 2016 elections.
The RK Nagar by-elections are being seen as a battle for supremacy between the two warring AIADMK factions. Above this, the victory also leads to establish their control over the party and reflects the support of the people.
