Rio Olympics highlights:
Rio Olympics started with a huge bash. It must be a ceremony for all sports lovers to watch their all time favourites’ performing. The first medal winner was Virginia Thrasher from the United States for 10m air rifle.
American swimmer Michael Phelps added another Olympic medal to his collection. This one being the 19th medal, he kept up the expectation of his country.
American sisters Serena and Venus Williams were thought sure medallists who lost against Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova. Venus lost her first round singles match, but Serena Williams easily made to round two.
On the other hands, many Indian sports persons continued to disappoint the fans by hairline misses. The Commonwealth gold medallist, Heena Sidhu failed to qualify for finals in the 10m Air Pistol event. She will be performing for a 25m pistol event scheduled to be held on August 9th. Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul from India too failed to finals in 10m air rifle. JItu rai could make to the final of 10m air pistol but ended up at 8th position.
After two disappointing days for India, Dipa Karmakar gave a ray of hope, by qualifying for finals in Artistic Gymnastics. She will be in the final round scheduled to be held on August 14.
In Archery Deepika Kumari and team lost against the Russian team in the quarter-final. The other team members Laishram Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi lost in the shoot-off round, where their performance was not up to the mark. India had beaten Colombia in the pre-quarterfinal 5-3 to make into the quarters.
Indian women’s hockey team gave their best by a 2-2 draw against higher-ranked Japan in the pool B match at this Olympics. Indian women’s hockey team returned to the Olympics after 36 years of hiatus. The next pool match against India will be on Tuesday against Great Britain.
