Reserve Bank Of India is going to release new Rs 100 notes in December 2018.It is expected that the printing of this new notes shall begin in April 2018. Earlier, new Rs 50 and Rs 500 notes were brought into the system and further denominations of Rs 200 and Rs 2000 notes were introduced. But the circulation of new Rs 200 notes has started from 25th August 2017.

RBI after launching Rs 200 notes ,stated that “To achieve the optimal system of currency that would minimize the number of denominations while increasing the probability of proffering exact change, especially at the lower end of denominations, there is a logical need to introduce the missing denomination of Rs 200, which will make the present currency system more efficient”.

The new Rs 200 is being introduced, helping people change high-value currency. According to SBI report, 43.6% of the total cash circulation is in Rs 500 notes, while Rs 100 is just over 20%.

Printing of new denomination Rs 100 notes will start, once the mint finishes the distribution of Rs 200 notes. It is said that the entry of Rs 200 notes into the market would take another 6months. However, the central bank official claimed that the existing Rs 100 notes will continue in the system and can be withdrawn without any disruptions. The size and dimension of new Rs 100 will remain same, to ensure that it is compatible with Automatic Teller Machines (ATM).
