From Last two days, People started blocking PM Narendra Modi on Twitter. The issue rose over Prime Minister Narendra Modi following some twitter users who accused of making objectionable comments over Journalist Gauri Lankesh murder. Twitter users point out that the accounts followed by the PM were tweeting abusive messages and celebrating Lankesh’s death.

In response to this, many of the Twitter users started blocking PM Narendra Modi, making #BlockNarendraModi trending all day. Gauri Lankesh, a 55-year-old journalist and a known critic of the right-wing Hindutva ideology. She was shot dead outside her house by unidentified men on Tuesday night. The murder created shock and anger in the country while they are people who made offensive comments on her death.

Addressing the controversy, Amit Malviya, BJP’s, National Head of Information and Technology,” PM Modi following someone on Twitter is not a character certificate of the person, and is not in any way a guarantee of how the person would conduct himself.” Malviya said, pointing out that Modi follows the Twitter accounts of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal as well.

While, there many followers who condemned PM Modi for following the abuser’s accounts, resulting in blocking his account. The senior minister of the union government, Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted,” I strongly condemn and deplore the messages on social media expressing happiness on the dastardly murder of Gauri Lankesh.”

Some followers feel that there’s no point in blocking PM Modi on Twitter is a childish act. According to few sources, #BlockNarendraModi is the campaign started by one of the rival parties of the ruling party, BJP. Non supporters of BlockNarendraModi campaign started blocking their leaders on social media. However, the strategy of blocking PM Modi backfired to other party leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has 33.8M followers, and he is the second most followed world leader on Twitter after US President Donald Trump.
