The Karnataka government started one of its ambitious project which serves food at an affordable price which starts today. The government inaugurates 101 Indira Canteens which serves hot lunch, dinner at Rs 10 and breakfast at Rs 5.
Congress Vice-President, Rahul Gandhi inaugurates the first canteen at Kanakanapalya in Jayanagar today at 11:30 AM. City major G. Padmavathi said, 101 Indira canteens will offer free dinner to all the visitors today to mark the inauguration. She also added that from Thursday onward breakfast, dinner and lunch would be available at concessional rates. These canteens will be open from 7:30 PM today for all the public.
Earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced his project while presenting the Budget plan on March 15th, 2017.The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner sets a deadline to launch 198 canteens to all the wards by August 15th.
The project is delayed due to poor planning and controversies regarding the location of the canteens. As a result, only 101 canteens were inaugurated on Wednesday. In Domlur, residents protested plans to set up an Indira Canteen in a park, and BBMP moved it to a temple. The KEF Infra Industrial Park got the contract for constructing Indira Canteens. Mayor and BBMP commissioner monitored the construction work.
Bengaluru development minister K J George launched Indira Canteen app which provides information about canteens, location, timings and menu and other details. George inaugurated centralized kitchen at Konena Agrahara (Ward 133) on Tuesday. He said Indira canteens and kitchen would maintain good quality for infrastructure, storage of raw materials, preparation of food and service. K J George also mentioned these canteens are comparable to five-star hotels when it comes to hygiene and quality of food.
