The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) took the 9th position as a public research institution in the world. According to the Scimago Institutions ranking World Report, 2017 CSIR ranked ninth in the total of 1,207 government institutions.

The ranking was based on research performance, innovation outputs and societal impact measured by their activities performed over worldwide. The development programs that reflect scientific, economic and social characteristics of institutes that come under the organization.

CSIR, after getting ranked comes in the companies of globally renowned organisations namely Chinese Academy of Sciences, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France, Helmholtz Gemeinschaft and Max Planck Gesellschaft in Germany, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Spain, Russian Academy of Sciences, Japan Science and Technology Agency, Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche, and Italy and Leibniz Gemeinschaft, Germany.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research stated that “In overall global ranking, CSIR stands at 75th position amongst 5250 institutions worldwide. It is the only Indian organization which has found a place amongst the Top 100 Global Institutions.”

CSIR, India’s largest research and development organization, was established in 1942 by the government. The organization carries out most of the research activities that take place in various institutes of India. It runs 37 laboratories and 39 field stations or extension centers across the nation. Some of the investigation and development activities of CSIR include aerospace engineering, structural engineering, ocean sciences, life sciences, metallurgy, chemicals, mining, food, petroleum, leather, and environmental science.

Dr. Girish Sahni is current director general of CSIR and CSIR celebrated its Platinum Jubilee on 25 September 2016 which was inaugurated by Prime minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. This is one of the proud moments of India as this can be considered as an opportunity to grow in research and development department all over the world.
