The Narendra Modi-led NDA government informed the Supreme Court on Monday suggesting the UID number(unique identification number) for cows just like Aadhaar number for humans. In order to ensure better protection and also to counter cattle smuggling, the government has come up with the new plan.
According to the reports, the Centre has submitted that it is considering tagging the cows and its progeny with an UID number will provide shelter homes and control the auctioning of the cattle. The Aadhar number that the government provides will record the breed, age, height, sex, lactation, horn type, body, colour, tail switch and also special marks details of the animal.
The details should be made mandatory as per the Centre in order to issue the Unique Identification Number and it costs Rs. 148 crore. The report was prepared by the committee headed by the joint secretary of the home ministry along with Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud.
The BJP-led (Bharatiya Janata Party) government proposed a dozen measures in response to an appeal filed by the Akhil Bharat Krishi Goseva Sangh seeking the better cow-protection. The panel said, “At the central level, monitoring could be done by Ministry of Environment & Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (DADF).”
It also added, “Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, has devised a method of tamper-proof identification of cattle using polyurethane tags with a unique identification number sequence. This may be made necessary for all cows and their children throughout India for all cattle that are owned.”
