Elections for 10,300 Gram Panchayats were organized last year itself. The number of villages in Gujarat is 18,584 with 14,017 Gram Panchayats. The voters casted two votes, One to elect the Sarpanch and other to choose the Sarpanch candidates.
The first phase of the elections used ballot papers, and as the number of villages is less, EVM’s are utilized in the second phase. The counting is currently going on. Polling was suspended at Visavadar tehsil of Junagadh district as a candidate for Sarpanch post, Balajibhai Lingariya died.
During the Gujarat Village elections at Borisana, in Kadi tehsil of Mehsana district, a gang of people created havoc at the polling station by allegedly stopping a man from escorting his mother. The incident leads to the clash between two groups and four individuals got injured severely. Kadi Police Station officials said that both the parties filed cases against each other, but no arrests happened till now.
Due to the malfunctions of Electronic Voting Machines(EVM) at the polling stations in Rasulabad and Puniyad in Vadodara district and Dedol in Panchmahal district, the voting was suspended.
Voting in the Dahod district with 83 village Panchayats took place peacefully. Elections were held to elect 1484 posts of Sarpanchs in 1557 villages in Gujarat.
