The government has turned down the proposals to grant the prestigious Padma Awards for the most prominent personalities of the country. The rejected list includes most of the politicians, celebrities such as controversial spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, BJP MP Baijayant Panda, air hostess Neerja Bhanot (the late), table maestro Zakir Hussain and the former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

According to the list of 18,768 nominations made by the Public Home Ministry, the maximum number of nominations received is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, NeerjaBhanot (who was killed during hijack in 1986) nominated by BJP MP Kirron Kher.

Apart from these, the other famous names that are turned down include journalist Arnab Goswami and music composer Anu Malik. The Padma Awards are expected to be awarded by the President Pranab Mukherjee later this year at the ceremonial function which will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

For this year, President Pranab Mukherjee approved 89 recipients for Padma Awards which includes 75 Padma Shri, 7 Padma Bhushan and 7 Padma Vibhushan awards. As per the reports, Veteran BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi and Nationalist Congress Party Leader Sharad Pawar who was awarded as the country’s second-highest civilian honour but they are not in the list of Padma Vibhushan nomination.
