Serena Williams, the defending champion of the Australian Open won’t be participating in this year’s Australian Open. She pulled out this Friday saying that she wasn’t at a level that she needs to be after giving birth but she was super close.
The 23 time Grand Slam winner made a return to the big stage at an exhibition at Abu Dhabi last month where she lost to the French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko. Before that her last match was almost a year ago in last year’s Australian Open final. She won there even after being two months pregnant. The decider was between her and her sister Venus William and it was a memorable match.
After the match up until now, she has gone through her first child birth and she married Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit. The wedding was graced by various starts from around the globe. Some featured guests were Beyonce and Kim Kardashian of the Kardashian sisters.
The 36 year old player said in a statement that after she competed in Abu Dhabi, she realized that even when she was really close, but she wasn’t where she personally wanted to be. She also said that her team and coach always said that she should only go to tournaments when she is prepared to finish the tournament till the end.
She believes that she can compete but she doesn’t just want to compete. She wants to do much better than that and fro that she needs time. She is disappointed about not competing in the Australian Open but she decided this with good reason.
We hope to see Serena Williams back in action pretty soon. Even though she isn’t playing in this year’s Australian Open, she would still stay the defending champion for the next Australian Open in our hearts.
