Finally, Foldable phones have been launched in the market. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford the handsets because of their expensive pricing. There’s one more thing that is bothersome with this model; the phone screen is made with plastic polymer instead of the usual glass material. While plastic screens do look great appearance wise, but they are not good as compared to the glass screens which were deemed to be strong and durable. Even the scratches were reportedly lesser as compared to the plastic screens.

Since, the need of the era calls for Foldable phones, hence only plastic polymers are able to do the trick. To keep up the hopes of the customers who are expecting glass-based screens, the company did confirm to manufacture such smartphones which come with ultra-thin glass material which doesn’t break while folding the phone. Corning, the famous company who has developed Gorilla Glass for smartphones till date has confirmed the people that they working on creating an ultra-thin glass that is bendable.

Wired recently reported that, the company is making sure that the glass material is being manufactured in such a way that it doesn’t impact the toughness of the phone.

John Bayne from Corning said“The back of the problem we’re trying to break, the technical challenge, is, can you keep those tight 3- to 5-millimeter bend radii and also increase the damage resistance of the glass,”

As per the latest reports it has been deduced that Corning is using the knowledge gathered from creating both Gorilla Glass and Willow Glass in order to create the bendable glass. While Gorilla Glasses are known for its durability, the Willow Glasses are known to roll up easily like a paper sheet. However, after repeated efforts, the researches have not yet found a glass prototype that shows both durability and bending abilities.

Bayne admitted that though the glass samples are functional they are not as per the industry standards, hence these prototypes are not released commercially. But he and his team are hoping to find a better sample soon which can be used full-fledged to meet the customer demands.
