State-run telecom firm BSNL has slashed 3G mobile Internet rates by three-fourth to counter Reliance Jio. Users can now avail 1GB of internet at just Rs 36 under this special pack. BSNL offers its customers 8GB of data on Rs. 291 plan, which is four times of 2GB earlier.

Also, Rs 78 plan doubles the data at 2GB. This would be the lowest tariff plan BSNL offers to its customers. The telecom operator has set a benchmark of offering 1GB of data at Rs. 50.

“Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has decided to offer up to four times extra data on existing data STVs (special tariff vouchers) available in the market,” BSNL said in a statement.

Alternatively, Reliance Jio service is offering free 4G data until March 31, 2017. However, mobile customers can avail 1 GB of 4G data every day, and the speeds get reduced after consumption of 1GB. Even other private telecom operators have also reduced their cost per GB as low as Rs 50.

“We are committed to providing affordable mobile services for all segments of the prepaid mobile customers. These offers will be valid from February 6, 2017, on Pan India basis,” says, RK Mittal, Board Director for Consumer Mobility, BSNL.

Reliance Jio has evolved as the largest broadband service provider in India with over 52.23 million broadband customers. As of now, BSNL fixed line services continues to dominate the broadband market with 9.95 million customers. The broadband provider ranks fifth in the mobile broadband segment with 20.39 million subscribers.
