World Refugee Day 2017: JUNE 20, Global Facts about Refugees 65.6 million people forcibly displaced

Every year thousands of families forced to leave their homes due to natural calamities and wars. In search of food, future and life many people travel to other countries and some lost their family members in their journey. Some are separated from their family and some are living the insecure life in other places. World Refugee Day marks the awareness on people to encourage and protect the refugees around the world.  The day also aims to recognize refugee for their contribution to the world.

65.6 million people forcibly displaced by the End Of 2016

According to the UN, more than millions people are displaced by the war and violence, of which 33 million are internally displaced and the other 17 million are refugees. World Refugee Day 2017 date is June 20, every year the day is observed on same date and is dedicates to create awareness on refugees throughout the world.  On December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 55/76 decided that from 2001, the world refugee day is celebrated on June 20. World Refugee Day 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

People around the world observed World Refugee Day Activities to encourage the protection of refugees.   • 65.6 million people were displaced due to war and persecution at the beginning of 2017.
  • 40.3 million were internally displaced, according to figures from NRC’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC). In addition, 25.4 million people had sought refuge outside their own country, according to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
  • The number of people forced to flee has increased with more than 50% over the last five years, up from 42.3 million in 2012.
  • Uganda received 532,725 new refugees last year, and was the country receiving the largest number of refugees worldwide. Most fled the conflict in South Sudan.
  • All in all, more than 737,000 people fled the conflict in South Sudan last year. Only Syria witnessed a larger number of new refugees, 824,000.
  • Turkey was the country hosting the largest number of refugees in the world, with 3.1 million, followed by Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and PakistanTwenty Four people are displaced every minute, said UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi
  • In 2015, only 201,400 refugees returned to their countries, most of the people returned to Afghanistan (61,400), Sudan (39,500), Somalia (32,300) or the Central African Republic (21,600)
  • It is estimated that 50% of refugees are under the age of 18
  • Pakistan stands first in highest number of refugees with 1.6 million.

  • Currently, Syrian refugee crisis is the worst that the world has seen since World War II
  • According to International Law, refugees are not allowed to be forced back to the countries they have fled
  • In 2014, 3 million people were forced to flee, which is the highest annual increase on record
  • 86% of world’s refugees are hosted by developing countries

 The United Nations General Assembly declared the Resolution 55/76 of celebrating Refugee day on 4th of December in 2000. Globally the annual celebration of the event started from 2001 on this day of June.

The annual event is all about honouring and appreciating the strength, courage and spirit of men, women and children who are forced to move from their homeland. On this World Refugee Day, some social organisations around the world recognise the contributions of refugees in their localities and conduct various activities.

At United Nations Headquarters, the UNHCR are hosting the Zaatari portal dialogue from 1 pm to 2 pm.

To commemorate World Refugee Day, the UNHCR partnering with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Action Campaign and UN Dept of Public Information, UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon will open a multimedia exhibit and will deliver remarks from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

World Refugee Day History

The United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees also abbreviated as UNHCR is an agency formed on 14 December 2023 and FilippoGrandi, the current Commissioner of UNHCR. The primary motto of UNHCR is to protect and support refugees and assists in their voluntary return, local integration or resettlement to a third country headquarters in Geneva, Swiss and is a member of UN development group.

In 1954 and 1981, UNHCR has won Nobel Peace Prize. So, following or supporting to UNHCR, the United Nations General Assembly decided and celebrated World Refugee Day on June 20.

As the resolution taken on 4 Dec 2023 but noted that 2001 as 50th anniversary resembling from UNHCR 1950 formation. African people also celebrate Refugee Day in several countries before 2000. The United Nations are noting that OAU (Organization of African Unity) had agreed to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa Refugee Day on 20 June.
