White-Topping Is Boon or Bane?

Major connecting roads in Bangalore are witnessing heavy traffic jams because of white topping. They have not provided alternate roads for a better traffic flow. Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has taken up major stretch of five kilometers from Lalbagh West Gate to Banashankari TTMC . This has made life miserable for motorists. It takes around 35mins to reach banashankari from Lalbagh, motorists say.

White-topping uses a bonded layer of concrete that is four to six inches thick, while an ultrathin layer is two to four inches thick. Ultrathin white-topping is suitable for light duty uses, such as roads with low traffic volume, parking lots and small airports. Maintenance is comparatively less when compared to normal roads.

“Even if we use alternative roads through residential areas, we get stuck at another unfinished part of a white-topping,” said Pramod Kumar, a resident of Banashankari. Motorists are having a tough time because of white-topping. You never know, a white topped road might have to be dug up for metro or gas line. BBMP has to work efficiently on this and should make sure that they would not dug up a white topped road as it going to cause inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians.

The incomplete white-topping work on kanakapura road is moving at a snail’s pace, making it difficult for motorists to move around. BBMP should ensure that they improve their pace by bringing in additional man-power to complete their project as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the BBMP claims that white-topping project is progressing smoothly and work will be finished soon.

Well, I would say that white-topping is a boon, because it last long for up to 20 to 30 years and do not require any kind of maintenance. It does not compromise with its quality. Irrespective of weather conditions, the road appears to be stable and rugged.
