MLO for Mexico-US ties

US-Mexico relationships are at a level of higher distress especially since the Trump government came
into power in the United States. At this time when both the nations face constraints in a relationship,
AMLO suggests a change is coming to the US-Mexico relations
The result of the Presidential elections in Mexico the past Sunday is outputting forward Andrés Manuel
López Obrador as their new president. AMLO, as he is commonly called, focused mainly on the
eradication of corruption in the county, where it has grown as a very prominent issue for the national
economy. Besides corruption, there was a special emphasis on the bilateral relation with their most
powerful neighbor - the USA.
During his campaign, he strongly criticized the approach of the US president. AMLO also promised a
new vigor in strengthening the relation between the neighbors as compared to the strictly diplomatic
efforts of the previous president Enrique Peña Nieto, which was the target of harsh criticism.
However, during his tenure, he will continue to face the same obstacles as he faced in the past 2 years
- the NAFTA disagreement, Immigration crisis, and not to ignore the personal relationship with Trump.
NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was not something that AMLO agreed to initially. Now
that the redraft is in progress his leftist mentality has put the other major proponents in worries. This
will impact approximately 80% of the exports of the country. Based on the records suggesting short
temper and intolerance, Obrador is not likely to be a passive player and be bullied by Trump, and will
mostly take direct control of his party and alliance as a whole. We might see drastic negotiations.
Immigration is also a hot topic between these countries. While the US in recent times is more
aggressive with the foreign policies, Mexico will still go on the non-intrusive and self-determinant
policies as they had been following earlier. But, that might have to change as his ex-patriot vote bank is
three times the runner-up candidate. Maybe it is time for Obrador to start getting involved in the
matters of other countries now. This might even spark some stones of Trumps Wall.

US to Suspend H-1B Visa Premium Payment Program Temporarily from April

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that in order to clear a backlog of regular H-1B visa applications, it is suspending for six months a programme that allowed some companies to jump to the head of the queue for quicker Premium processing of H-1B visas by paying a special fee.

This is not a suspension of the H-1B visas, but only of the “Premium Processing”, which allows companies to pay $1,125 to go to the top of the line ahead of those waiting for applications to be processed, the USCIS said on Friday.

Under Premium Processing, a decision is made on H-1B application within 15 days, while the regular applications take more than three months - period that has lengthened because of the surge in special Processing applications.

H1-B Visa Reforms: Effects and Impact on India

US House of Representatives has introduced legislation which doubles the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to $130,000. This H-1B visa reform can stop firms replacing American employees with foreign workers, including Indians. California Congressman Zoe Lofgren introduced this High-Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017.

The bill prioritizes the market allocation of visas for the companies to pay 200% of a wage calculated by the survey. This will also eliminate the lowest pay category and hikes the salary level of H-1B dependent employer to greater than $130,000.

Now, the hike is more than double of the H-1B minimum wage which is $60,000 currently. The wage rate is set in 1989 and remained unchanged till now ever since then.

“My legislation refocuses the H-1B program to its original intent—to seek out and find the best and brightest from around the world, and to supplement the US workforce with talented, highly-paid, and highly-skilled workers who help create jobs here in America, not replace them,” said Lofgren.

H-1B Visa Reform Effects

The reform protects the interests of Americans against the arrival of foreigners to work in the US job market. US issues 85,000 H1-B visas every year, of which a sizeable chunk applicants are Indians. Tech companies which send their workers for off-site projects, and Indian students migrating to the US for pursuing a higher degree will be among the most affected by the changes to the visa policy.

Impact on India?

H-1B visa reform effects already took place in the Indian market resulting in a plummet in share prices of the main tech companies. Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra, HCL, and Wipro were among those badly hit. The act also leads to drop in the student’s interest towards American universities.

Will H-1B visa reform leads to US visa rejection?

No, genuine students will not be rejected. The Act means to build a bridge from F-1 student status to Lawful Permanent Residence. So, visas will not be denied only on the basis of applicant intention to immigrate to the US. This also applies for those holding P (Athletes, Artists, and Entertainers) and free trade visa holders and O-1 (Extraordinary Ability).

President Donald Trump’s Role

Trump had also proposed to cut down the number of H1-B visas issued annually. He did not sign an executive order like banning immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries. However, the Bill is likely to be pass as the Republicans control both the Senate and House of Representatives of the Congress.

Smart Glasses Automatically Focus on What You Looking at

Upon wearing a pair eyeglasses that having a lens or constantly changing the reading glasses may soon be over. Smart glasses are one of the latest technology trends that were developed by the scientists. The most interesting highlight of these is, it automatically focuses on the object of what person is seeing.

Whether the object is far or close, these Smart glasses focus automatically and let the user view more clearly. The human eye has a lens that adjusts the focus on what person is seeing. But as the person’s age increasing the ability to focus will gradually decrease. Due to this most of all the people wear reading glasses or bifocals.

However, with the recent, invent of Smart glasses may become the solution for the eye-site problems. The glasses developed by researchers at the University of Utah in the United States. They contain lenses that are made up of glycerin, a thick colourless liquid which enclosed by thick rubber-fiber on front and back.

The rear membrane on each lens connected with the series of three mechanical actuators that pushes the membrane back and forth. It changes the curvature of the liquid lens and focal length between eye and lens.

“Most people who get reading glasses have to put them on and take them off all the time. You don’t have to do that anymore. You put these on, and it’s always clear,” said Carlos Mastrangelo, computer engineering professor at Utah.

According to the researchers, when a person wears Smart glasses and looks at an object the meter automatically measures the distance. And then tells the actuators how to curve the lens. If the wearer sees the object that is closer, the distance meter readjusts and shows the actuators to reshape the lens for far sight.

The lenses of these Smart glasses can change the focus from one object to another in just 14 milliseconds. A rechargeable battery embedded in the frames can charge more than 24hours as per charge. Moreover, the glasses run through the provided smartphone apps.

Smart glasses invented by the group which also include graduate teacher Aishwaryadev Banerjee. In the bridge of glasses, the distance meter placed which measures the distance via pulses of infrared light. Before putting them for the first time, wearers have to input their eyeglasses prescription into one of the smartphone apps. And then it calibrates the lenses via Bluetooth automatically.
