Tamil Nadu Government has made a big move for Transgenders. TN has announced the free education for TGS in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. After Kerala state has unveiled a policy for transgenders, which aims to give a platform to 25,000 transgenders in the state to demand a right to equality, dignity, expression and development, Tamil Nadu made this decision to empower transgenders.
TGs will get the free education in the Institutes under the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University from this academic year. Standing Council for Academic Affairs, has granted the students strength for various Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) courses. One seat in each course in University and affiliated colleges would be allotted to a person from the transgender community.
Transgender activist and founder of Sahodari Foundation, Kalki Subramaniam appreciated the government decision. It also stated that other top universities in the country will also follow the path on providing free education to TGs. Education is the only hope for transsexual people to become free of social discrimination.
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is the first university to offer free education to transgenders. It has 24 departments in arts, science, languages, engineering and technology, 102 colleges are affiliated in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts.
