Maharashtra Likely to Come Up with a Policy to Regulate Food Prices in Multiplexes

The Maharashtra Government has notified the Bombay Court that it is planning to draft a policy to regulate the prices of food sold inside multiplexes. This decision was taken by the state government on Wednesday.

A Public Interest Litigation was filed by Mr. Jainendra Baxi said that the price of food being sold inside the theatres was pretty high when compared to the same food being sold outside the multiplex. He also questioned, “If the people are not allowed to bring outside food, why are outside vendors being allowed into the multiplex?”

Purnima Kantharia, a Government Pleader has informed the Bombay High Court that the suggestions from Multiplex Association and the petitioner has been forwarded to the state government and it is under consideration.

Also, the government officials have stated that guidelines will soon be formulated and will be implemented across all the theatres in Maharashtra. The Bombay High Court has granted six weeks’ time to the state government to file its reply to the petition. The High Court has also stated that the prices of food being sold in multiplexes have to be nominal.

Bombay High court was hearing the petition filed by Jainendra Baxi, wherein the plea claimed that there was no statutory or legal provision prohibiting people from carrying personal food or water inside the multiplex.

Aditya Pratap, lawyer of Jainendra Baxi stated that the Maharashtra Cinemas Regulation prohibit selling food inside movie theatres and this rule is openly disregarded by cinema halls with several food stalls serving beverages inside the theatres. Also, new movie theatres in Maharashtra have buttons right on their seats to call for the waiters, order food and beverages, and get it delivered to their seats.
