Apple ready to pay $24.9 million to Dallas Company to settle Siri patent

Apple is again on the news for violating the patents for the second time in the same year. Earlier alleged of using intellectual properties in its prime time features like face time and I message & was penalised by the court for $625.6 million to another firm holding the patent.

The Tech Giant had now agreed to pay $24.9 million for violating the patent and settle the case one month before going to the trial court. This time for using in the case of its popular voice assistant Siri on its devices. The patent which states as “Natural language interface using constrained intermediate dictionary of results “was developed by a professor named Dr. Cheng Hsu assisted by Veera Boonjing, a doctoral student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. The patent is all about user interfaces recognizing local language licensed to a Dallas-based company called Dynamic Advances.

 The Company is paying $5 million for the Marathon Patent Group, which is dynamic advance’s parent after the immediate drop of the case. The patent was exclusively licensed by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to Dynamic Advances in the year 2007, which was four years before the release of Apple’s Siri to iPhone 4 on 2011.The case was filed after one year on October 2012 by the Dallas company, and it is concluded now before going on to the trail. The tech company had extended the voice assistant’s features to all its devices excluding Mac Books.

The balance amount of $19.9 million would be summed up later to the Marathon group in return getting the patent rights and assurance of not suing again for three years. It is revealed that about half of the amount paid by the Apple would be directed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. The university had declined to the offered royalty amount. However, the final cost-sharing agreement is not done between them and will be revealed once confirmed.

US government urges Windows users to Uninstall QuickTime

US – CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team) United States Department of Homeland Security announced new vulnerabilities and instructed Windows users to uninstall Apple QuickTime.

According to trend micro, Windows user might no longer provide with using Apple QuickTime. Due to the lack of security updates to Windows QuickTime users departing this software vulnerable to exploitation.

The two zero day initiative issued advisories vulnerabilities are ZDI – 16 – 241 and ZDI – 16 – 242. Not anymore, Apple providing security updates for QuickTime for Windows user.

Trend Micro stated to follow the Apple guidance and to uninstall QuickTime for Windows as soon as possible with two stated reasons:

At first, Apple is expressing disapproval of Microsoft Windows and will be no security updates on Windows platform and advice to uninstall it which does not apply to QuickTime on MAC OS. Secondly, Zero day initiative proclaimed two advisories are specifying critical vulnerabilities affecting QuickTime for Windows released in agreement with ZDI disclosure policy.

Impact for those who has not uninstalled QuickTime from Windows incorporates, admit remote aggressor to take control of affected systems. Computers operating unsubstantiated software exposed to elevate cyber security hazards, such as increased exposure to malicious attacks or electronic data loss.

Family sharing to replace Apple iTunes allowance for Kids

Apple iTunes allowances will be call off from 13th April 2016 and no more sign up for new iTunes allowance for kids. On 25th May, existing users will automatically cancel. If in case, any usage credit allocation remains, it will be in the beneficiary account until used completely.

Individual sharing is not feasible, but you can take advantage of Family sharing. iTunes Allowance let parent set up monthly credit for their kids to spend on App Store and iTunes Store purchases. That means, a child can assign a $5/month allowance for the App store and iTunes store.

It is the easiest way to keep connected with family by sharing photos, calendar, and more and you can also control your kids spending time with the parent user device. One family organizer will send an invite though family members will join and automatically family sharing set-up will add up the joined family members.

Family sharing feature that rolled out with iOS 8, OS X Yosemite and iTunes 12, which enable a parent to purchase content by themselves, before sharing it with the rest of the family and also helps in approve a child’s spending before being billed.

Apple has not disclosed the reason for the stated news, but, probably to make easier to the users and standard restrictions targeting children.
