Indian Railway is taking every measure for faster and safer journey to passengers. Indian railway is introducing Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) on total 3330 km which costs nearly Rs 2000 crore.

Over the next three to four years, the advance accident prevention measures will be on line, in which trains will be in constant communication with each other through the sensors installed on the track side, will be implemented on the track side.

Currently, the work is in process for installing the advance safety measure in two phases. In first phase, the work has been taken up on 1244km route of automatic signalling sections with EMU services including Sealdah-Howrah Khana section, Howrah-Kharagpur section, Delhi-Panipat section and Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu section.

In second phase, the implementation of TPWS on 2086 km and taken up on high density routes including Delhi- Delhi-Ambala- Amritsar section, Kanpur-Mughalsarai and Agra-Gwalior sections, Ghaziabad-Tundla- Kanpur,  Mumbai Central-Virar-Vadodara-Ahmedabad section and Arakkonam- Jolarpettai section.

The TPWS also reduces the delay of train during foggy weather, which is a proven European train protection technology and deployed extensively on world railways. A railway official said, “If a train jumped the signal, approached the signal too fast, or approached the buffer stops too fast, the TPWS would put the breaks and bring the train to a standstill.” This system will also prevent accident that takes place due to loco pilot’s error in passing on the signals.

It had successfully piloted the system in the Dum Dum Kavi Subhash section of the Kolkata Metro rail, Chennai-Gummidipundi suburban section and Hazrat Nizamuddin-Agra and Basin Bridge-Arrakonam sections.
