Bad news for Liquor Shop owners! Supreme Court today has come up with a landmark and bold decision on liquor shops. Yes, the SC said, liquor stores running at state and national highways would be shutdown from April 1. The decision has made by the court to control accidents and the threat of Alcohol.
The Head-court bench headed by Chief Justice of India T S Thakur delivered a judgment to shut liquor shops for the safety of the general public. The Court had also mentioned that liquor shop owners could operate the stores up to their valid license period, but the same won’t be renewed after March 31, 2016.
Announcing some measures to deal with public drinking, the Delhi government has also announced the Excise Act under which taking alcohol at public places will impose a fine of Rs 5,000, and if the drinker creates any nuisance, then the fine will be up to Rs 10,000 to three months jail term.
Delhi Government recently declared that there would be no new liquor shops with Government license opened in the country capital. It also mentioned that if the citizens face any problems with liquor shops in their living area, they should give a written complaint with the signature of at least 10 percent voters of that particular area.
As we know, previously, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had enforced a blanket ban on sale and feeding of all types of liquor. However, the High Court of Patna, on September 30, had suppressed the April 5 Notification of the state government banning drinking and sale of alcohol in the state, saying it is ultra vires of the constitution.
