Writer Shoba de’s tweet on Indian athletes raised huge controversy and objection from all over. She tweeted on Monday night saying that

“Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity.”

This meant that the goal of Indian Olympians from India is to take selfies and come back empty hand with no medals. She received backlash from, athletic landscape and many others on the same social media.

De’s remarks have hurt most of the athletes who are giving their best performances in spite of all odds.

Some of the athletes who tweeted back on her statement were, Abhinav Bindra, Jwala Gutta, Somdev Dev Raman etc.

When asked by the media about the statement she said that she is with her statement and there is no change in it. She denied that she mocked the athletes but mentioned that she was against the organisation which is providing poor facilities and infra.

India had seen a disappointing three days at Rio Olympics 2016. But such comments from de came inspite of Dipa karamkar making into the finals in gymnastics that was never made by any Indian Olympian.
