All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi is again in the news with his words. The leader commented about the BJP’s cow protecting agenda in UP. Recently, UP CM Yogi Adityanath has imposed a ban on cow slaughter in the Northeast.

“BJP’s hypocrisy is that in Uttar Pradesh cow is a mummy but in the Northeast it’s yummy,” Owaisi quoted. He commented on the issue as BJP asserting that no cow slaughter ban will be enforced in the three northeastern states.

Beef is broadly consumed in Christian-majority states like Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Drive against illegal cow slaughter in Uttar Pradesh has had negative consequences for BJP in these states.

Owaisi comments invite criticism as the cow is like a mother for Hindus and many BJP leaders have said that publicly.“Ban on cow slaughter like the one in UP won’t take effect in Nagaland if our party comes to power next year. The reality here is very different, and our central leaders are aware of that,” says Nagaland BJP chief Visasolie Lhoungu.

The saffron party has an agenda of a nationwide ban on the culling of cows which is considered holy by many Hindus. States like Gujarat impose life in jail for cow slaughter while Rajasthan is the only state which has a ministry of cow welfare. Critics say that ban on cow meat may lead to war against many Muslims and Dalits.
