Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited(BSNL), state-owned telecom firm, is planning to launch 4G services from the next financial year. BSNL 4G services will be set up in 14 telecom circles across the country.

Minister of state for communication said that the company would not be participating in the upcoming 4G spectrum auction due to financial and other reasons.

“BSNL plans to upgrade its network for 4G GSM services through tender. Based on the outcome of the bid, tentatively BSNL 4G services may launch progressively during the next financial year (2017-18),” Sinha said.

The minister further added that Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) does not have immediate plans of launching the 4G services as it has already surrendered 2300 MHz band spectrum.

BSNL is planning to install the 4G base tower stations in the existing GSM’s so there will be no additional expenses for installing new towers. And when asked about the device ecosystem, he said that there are some 4G handsets in the market like Apple, Motorola, Lenovo, Google, Micromax, etc

According to a senior BSNL official, launch of 4G services in a 2,500Mhz band is feasible and commercially remunerative for the company. BSNL has soft launched 4G in Chandigarh this January and demonstrated 35Mbps speed.

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular have started their 4G services in various cities and now BSNL going to enter the sector. Reliance jio Infocom will be joining the 4G market soon, to intensify the market competition.
