The top Taiwanese Computer hardware manufacturer, Acer had recently revealed to California Attorney General (AG) that its US online store Acer.com was hacked and a massive sensitive data of customers is at risk. Every Online shopper who accessed the website over the past 12 months i.e., from 12th May, 2015 to 28th April, 2016 is affected in this breach. Credentials like customer names, addresses and complete details of their credit cards like expiry dates, three digit CVC number are hacked.

The data breach affects 34,500 online shoppers based in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The electronic manufacturer has sent a letter to all its customers saying,” We recently identified a security issue involving the information of certain customers who used our ecommerce site between May 12, 2023 and April 28, 2016, which resulted in unauthorized access by a third party.”

However, the company is not clear about the hackers and Acer to PCWorld said that the data was stolen because the company “inadvertently stored [the stolen consumer data] in an unsecured format.” This unauthorized third party access is revealed through Acer letter to California AG.

The company has assured all its customers through the letter which states, “Safeguarding your personal information is important to us. We took immediate steps to remediate this security issue upon identifying it, and we are being assisted by outside cyber security experts. We have reported this issue to our credit card payment processor. We have also contacted and offered our full cooperation to federal law enforcement.”

“If you suspect that you are a victim of identity theft or fraud, you have the right to file a police report. In addition, you may contact your State Attorney General’s office or the US Federal Trade Commission to learn about steps you can take to protect yourself against identity theft.”

Well, it is serious affect because all the sensitive credit card information is theft. So, the company advises all its customers who purchased its products in the past 12 months, to check their payment statements and make sure that they are not affected in this hack. And no matter what, you should always be careful with your sensitive data.
