WhatsApp Digital Payments to be Rolled out in India

WhatsApp is likely to launch peer-to-peer payments in India in the coming six months. The Facebook-owned messaging app is hiring an expertise head of digital transactions. This WhatsApp digital payments option in the app mainly deals with UPI (Unified Payments Interface), Aadhaar (India’s biometric identity system) and BHIM.

Recently, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton said that the company may debut into digital payments and that it is in ‘early stages’ of investigating the segment. WhatsApp emerged as the most popular messaging service in India with over 200 million users in the country. The app is already being used for communicating with customers by small and individual business owners.

Also, it allows regional businesses like it provide news service in rural Uttar Pradesh with 8000 paid subscribers. India’s digital payments scene has exploded in the recent months, and digital transactions are growing each year. The demonization move took by the government back in November has made way for more digital transactions.

India has also built the UPI which led to built many payment apps on top of it. However, Apps built on UPI can seamlessly transact between accounts. BHIM app launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one such app for instance. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley claimed that the BHIM app has been downloaded by 12.5 million people. And now, most private banks and wallet operators like Paytm and PhonePe also support UPI-based payments now.

Whatsapp planning to launch peer-to-peer payments in six months.

WhatsApp, one of the most downloaded smartphone application was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum and later took over by Facebook. WhatsApp is currently recruiting the head of all the digital transactions and UPI maintenance, Aadhaar system, and BHIM transactions. The Ken, publisher reported this first. Brian Acton said that they are doing ground work for the implementation of UPI payments.

WhatsApp text status update brings the old text status feature for its users

WhatsApp rolls out old ‘text status’ feature again for it users. Users can update the WhatsApp app to the stable Android v2.17.107 from Google Play Store to get this old text feature. Recently WhatsApp had replaced the old text status with snapchat stories like feature. Users can upload pics and small video clips as their status, which will automatically get disappear after 24 hours.

The status feature also brought few in-app customizations as well. However, users didn’t like this feature and there demand the need for WhatsApp text status update.Besides the new feature, WhatsApp has removed the option of adding texts to the status. But, not many users liked the feature and demanded the old text status back.

This new WhatsApp text status update brings the old feature with the name “About and phone number”. The user can have access to it by going into Profile tab. As of now, the feature is only available for Android users and will be available for iOS users. This new feature is available in the latest WhatsApp 2.17.111 app version.

“We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we’ve integrated this feature into the about section in profile settings. Now, the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at Group info,” says WhatsApp spokesperson.

However, new WhatsApp update is not available for iOS users at this moment but will be rolled out for all soon. The text status feature exactly looks like the old one and comes with few default statuses. You don’t observe any change in the old text status.

“One potential revenue source is to charge businesses that want to contact customers on Whatsapp. But the company is working carefully to avoid problems with spam messages,” said the official spokesperson.

However, the business persons can contact their consumers directly through the Whatsapp New Feature and even they can make the Advertisements. Whatsapp will charge little amount for their sales, and the trials are conducted in some places where it is very famous and used by most of the people. If the Whatsapp makes this feature less risky, the businesses need not contact third party apps for their preparation.

Whatsapp has started rolling out two-step verification for its users on all platforms. The process is being tested on the beta versions of the Android app and now introduced to all users. This Whatsapp two-step verification is an optional feature to ensure security of the account.

You’ll get a code for accessing the account each time when you setup WhatApp on a different smartphone. The feature enables a six-digit passcode which should be accompanied in any attempt to verify your phone number for Whatsapp.
