Jack Dorsey Buys $7 Million of Twitter Shares

Days after Twitter revealed its fourth-quarter earnings that missed company’s revenue estimates, CEO Jack Dorsey has bought $7 million worth of Twitter stock, media reports said.

According to a report in Recode on Tuesday, the documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission showed Dorsey made two separate purchases he bought about $1 million in stock on Monday, and then $6 million worth of Twitter stock on Tuesday.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Dorsey posted the filing with the caption “#LoveTwitter”.

According to media reports, Twitter’s revenue growth came in at just one per cent, a far cry from the 48 per cent year-over-year growth Twitter reported during the same period in 2016.

In a surprise for the social media fraternity, Chinese microblogging website Weibo has for the first time overtaken Twitter with its market capitalisation hitting $11.3 billion, surpassing Twitter’s $11.1 billion market cap which is a difference of about $200 million.

This is the first time Weibo’s market capitalisation has risen past Twitter on a close-of-day basis. Dorsey had last time bought a small share in August 2015 shortly after he became Twitter’s interim CEO.

“The new shares represent about three per cent of Dorsey’s overall Twitter holding. Twitter stock was up five per cent on the day and another one per cent in after-hours trading,” the report noted.

According to a report, shares rallied on back of Alibaba-owned Weibo’s ability to monetise its subscriber base. This is the first time Weibo’s market capitalisation has risen past Twitter on a close-of-day basis.

Weibo currently has more than 340 million monthly average users, compared to 319 million Twitter monthly active users. Twitter’s share price dropped last week after the company missed revenue forecasts.

Last time Weibo came close to eclipsing Twitter was when the latter’s shares tumbled in October at a time businesses like Google, Walt Disney and Salesforce were rumoured to take over the company, the report said.

Twitter’s two top executives, Jeffrey Siminoff, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion and Renee Atwood, Chief Human Resources Officer, have announced to leave the company.

Twitter is going through a major overhaul under CEO Jack Dorsey as many top-notch executives have quit the company in the recent past. Dorsey brought in two board members in a bid to revive the company and earn the trust of investors.

Twitter to Add GIF Support For Android Users Soon

Twitter editorial director Karen Wickre and Shariq Rizvi, who confounded the direct response ads team at Twitter, announced their departures in late 2016.

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Adam Messinger and its Vice President for products Josh McFarland also quit. Twitter’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Adam Bain who was in-charge of the micro-blogging website’s revenue business also quit the company.

Twitter has grown by two million monthly active users in the fourth quarter, finishing the year with 319 million worldwide, media reports said. According to a report in Recode on Thursday, the spectacle of the US presidential election was Twitter’s best material in years, and made the service a crucial source for direct news.

For Twitter, it was the slowest quarter all year for user growth. Its US user growth, where it has 67 million monthly active users, was actually zero. This is in contrast to the Facebook where the user growth is accelerating despite its larger size.

According to Twitter’s COO Anthony Noto, Trump sparks “conversation and discussion” on Twitter, but chalked up Twitter’s small user growth during the quarter to “product changes and marketing”, not the election.

Donald Trump’s rise and other newsy events are making Twitter more addictive and engaging for its users.

“The whole world is watching Twitter. While we may not be currently meeting everyone’s growth expectations, there is one thing that continues to grow and outpace our peers: Twitter’s influence and impact,” Jack Dorsey, CEO, Twitter, was quoted as saying.

Jack Dorsey asked Twitter users on Wednesday, “What’s the most important thing you want to see Twitter improve or create in 2017?” In response to this question, Dorsey received requests for an edit feature. In reply to one of these requests, Dorsey asked if the user wanted the edit feature for a limited time frame after posting the tweet or without any time limitation.”

He also added that “This is our most requested feature (today & always). Mostly to quickly fix mistakes and anything beyond would need to show revision history.  The editing feature can be made available exclusively for the verified users on the website.”

As per the latest reports, the company’s CEO Jack Dorsey says that the Twitter Editing Feature needed heading into 2017.  And this feature will be made available for everyone. Even though the announcement of adding the edit option made but there is no option of introducing the feature right away.
